I don't understand why they didn't bring in Lehner. I have no faith in Kinkaid to repeat what he did last year. Lehner was solid, he was just on a bad team.

About time the analytics crew noted something that the people who actually watch the Devils, and not just read the stats have known for a while, Schneider is not an elite goalie.

He was elite, for a couple of seasons. But not all his fault, our D....

Na he was just hurt last year he's still an elite goaltender but every sniper in the league knows that all you have to do is shoot high while he butterflies

He played better in the playoffs, so hopefully he picks up where he left off. Otherwise, looking at current rosters, there's not a lot of teams who have question marks in goal. STL, VAN, EDM, CAR...that's about it. Maybe CHI depending on Crawford's status.

Not an easy asset to trade unless GMs are only looking at name recognition and not recent stats.

If you were Lehner, would you take a 1 year flier to battled TWO goalies for playing time? Or go to NYI and be guaranteed the starters spot and hit the market again next summer?

I don't think he every fully recovered from his injury, before he went down at christmas time his save percentage was 9.20 and his GAA was 2.59....Both are pretty close to his career averages.... Then look what he did in playoffs, he will be fine.

I watch every Devils game and Schneider was elite for years, some of which people still ripped on him during.

I wish they had just shut him down for the season rather than having him come back partially injured. I think having a bad season on the worst Devils team in recent memory into an injured season makes it look worse than it is. If Schneider is bad this year I'll buy him being past his prime but I think it's hard to create a trend from what is presented, although I understand what it's starting to look like.

Not only that, but not many GM's are going to want to commit that long and that much money to a (probably) declining 32 year old goaltender, let alone give up assets to get him.

Despite the graph, it wouldn't surprise me at all in he rebounded nicely. The teams has been syeadily improving over the years and relying on him less, BUT goaltending is almost impossible to predict. There's too many factors that are unaccounted for and even when they are, there is no consensus on their meaning or effect. The very same can be said for Kinkaid.

Todd I was reading on Sportsnet or something that Schneider's off season hip surgery recovery has been set back & he may not be ready. Probably some of the reasons for his declining numbers were injury related & with goalies, good luck trying to trade him if his hips are an issue.

The Coyotes have Antti Raanta, who posted a .930 save % last year and just signed an extension.

They're fine.

Probably because Lehner has never had a great season like schneids, and has hit lower lows in his career. Schneids is THE guy, certainly not KK, not blackwood. Between injuries and a bottom 5 D core in the league he was mediocre. But if he comes back 100% healthy, I have no doubt he will be a top 10 goalie that could even be traded for a 1st rounder. I have faith.

One of the sadder sports related pieces I have read in a while, but unfortunately feels very true. I think the fact that the 2015-16 and 2016-17 Devils teams were complete tire-fires played a big factor in those declining numbers (he kept them in more games than you could count), but last season was particularly concerning that he was even worse on a better team.

Throw in a defense that is going to have a hard time stopping anyone, and I think it is going to be very very tough for Schneider to round back into top 10 goalie form.

was never a fan of the cory trade. that was just the typical lou band-aid move as opposed to going rebuild. not only did we miss out on a promising player in harvat, schneider kept those terrible teams afloat just enough to miss out on a legit chances at mcdavid & matthews.

Really? Sorry, I'd do that trade 10 times over. Top-10 picks aren't guaranteed homeruns (lol, look at Zacha). Trade one first rounder for a potential franchise goalie just entering his prime? Sorry, seemingly EVERY Devil fan (except for you, apparently) was in favor of that deal at the time.

Also, this notion that they should have simply tanked for better prospects is so outrageous. The ramifications of being a losing team year after year are huge to a franchise. Attendance drops which means revenue is down, which typically means spending on UFAs goes down. Oh, and what UFA would ever want to sign with a proven loser? And, for the players on the roster, what kind of message does it send to them when you have no interest in trying to make the team competitive?

Ugh...this isn't a video game where you simply stockpile assets. There's jobs, reputations, fortunes all at stake. Good grief.

those teams were terrible and pretty sure attendance was down. take a look at the rosters. lou's final years in nj atrocious. just saying rather took a shot at a top 10 pick especially since the year before we picked 29th and the year after we were "gifted" the 30th.
